Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives:
Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
1941년 12월 7일 불명예스러운 운명의 날이 되는 어제, 미합중국은 갑자기 그리고 의도적으로 대일본제국 해군과 공군에게 공격당했습니다.
The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.
미국은 그 나라와 평화를 유지하고 있었고, 일본의 간청에 따라 태평양의 평화 유지를 위해 정부 및 황제와 여전히 대화하고 있었습니다.
Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.
실제로 일본 비행대가 미국 오아후 섬에서 폭격을 개시한 지 1시간 후 주일 일본대사와 동료들은 최근 미국의 메시지에 정식 답변을 우리 국무장관에게 전달했습니다. 그리고 이 답변은 기존의 외교 협상을 계속하는 것은 무의미해 보인다고 말하고 있지만 전쟁 위협이나 무력 공격의 징후는 포함되어 있지 않았습니다.
It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
하와이와 일본과의 거리는 며칠이나 몇 주 전에 의도적으로 공격이 계획되었음을 밝히는 것으로 기록됩니다. 그동안 일본 정부는 허위 발언이나 평화 지속에 대한 희망 표명을 통해 의도적으로 미국을 속이려 해 왔습니다.
The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.
어제 하와이 제도에 대한 공격은 미 해군과 군대에 심각한 손해를 입혔습니다. 안타깝게도 많은 미국인들의 목숨을 잃었습니다. 게다가 샌프란시스코와 호놀룰루 사이의 공해상에서 미국 선박이 어뢰 공격을 받은 것으로 보고되었습니다.
Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.
And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.
어제 일본 정부도 말라야에 대한 공격을 개시했습니다.
어젯밤 일본군이 홍콩을 공격했습니다.
어젯밤 일본군이 괌을 공격했습니다.
어젯밤 일본군이 필리핀 제도를 공격했습니다.
어젯밤 일본군은 웨이크 섬을 공격했습니다.
그리고 오늘 아침 일본군은 미드웨이 섬을 공격했습니다.
Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.
그래서 일본은 태평양 전역에 걸쳐 기습 공격을 해왔습니다. 어제와 오늘의 사실은 스스로를 말해줍니다. 미국 국민들은 이미 의견을 모아 우리나라 생명과 안전 자체에 미치는 영향을 잘 이해하고 있습니다.
As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.
No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.
저는 육해군 최고사령관으로서 방위를 위해 모든 수단을 강구하라고 지시했습니다. 그러나 우리에 대한 공격의 성격은 우리나라 전체에 영원히 기억될 것입니다.
이 계획적인 침략을 극복하는 데 얼마나 시간이 걸리더라도 정의로운 힘을 가진 미국 국민은 절대적인 승리를 쟁취할 것입니다.
I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.
저는 우리가 최대한 자기 자신을 지킬 뿐만 아니라 이러한 형태의 배신이 다시는 우리를 위험에 빠뜨리지 않을 것이라고 단언할 때 의회와 국민의 의지를 해석할 것이라고 믿습니다.
Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.
With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us God.
적대행위가 존재합니다. 우리 민족, 우리 영토, 우리나라의 이익이 중대한 위험에 처해 있다는 사실에 눈을 깜박일 필요가 없습니다.
우리 군대에 자신감을 가지고 우리 민족의 끝없는 결의로 우리는 필연적인 승리를 손에 넣을 것입니다. 그러니 신이여 도와주세요.
I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.
1941년 12월 7일 일요일 일본에 의한 이유 없는 무자비한 공격 이후, 미국과 일본 제국 사이에 전쟁 상태가 존재했음을 의회가 선언할 것을 요청합니다.
